About this Encyclopedia

Welcome to the Pan African Studies Encyclopedia.

This encyclopedia was created by students in ETHN 170: Pan African Studies at California State University, Sacramento. It is a collaborative digital project designed to introduce readers to key concepts, movements, events, and ideas that have shaped the lives of people of African descent around the world.

Encyclopedias play an important role in how knowledge is organized, shared, and preserved. They help readers explore unfamiliar topics, discover connections between ideas, and access information that might otherwise remain difficult to find. Historically, encyclopedias have also reflected the values and priorities of the societies that produced them. As a result, some stories, communities, and perspectives have been excluded or overlooked.

This project seeks to contribute to a broader understanding of Black life, history, culture, and thought. Each entry was researched and written by a student who selected a topic that sparked their curiosity and deepened their understanding of Pan African Studies. Together, these entries reflect the diversity, creativity, and intellectual richness of the field.

One of the goals of this encyclopedia is to demonstrate that students are not only consumers of knowledge—they are also knowledge-makers. By conducting research, writing for a public audience, and collaborating with their peers, students contributed to a shared resource that can be used by classmates, educators, community members, and anyone interested in learning more about Pan African Studies.

We invite you to explore the encyclopedia, follow your curiosity, and make connections across entries. Whether you are new to Pan African Studies or already familiar with the field, we hope these articles encourage further learning, reflection, and conversation.

Knowledge grows when it is shared. This encyclopedia is one small contribution to that ongoing collective project.
